Netanyahu to Dismantle Outposts as Gesture to Obama
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak have agreed on a plan to evacuate illegal outposts in the West Bank, mainly those located on Palestinian land, within weeks, Defense Ministry sources told Haaretz Wednesday.
The sources said Barak intends to dismantle a number of outposts out of 26 illegal ones. “It is up to him entirely, and on the time and circumstances he sees fit. Netanyahu won’t make difficulties. They’re in sync,” a source said.
Ministers, including those from Likud, said Wednesday that Netanyahu probably promised United States President Barack Obama in their meeting that Israel would dismantle outposts soon. >>>
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak says he would evacuate illegal outposts of the occupied West Bank even if force is required.
“We will dismantle the illegal outposts. If it won’t be through understanding, it will be done quickly and by force,” Haaretz quoted Barak as saying on Wednesday.
Citing Defense Ministry sources, the daily reported that Barak intends to dismantle a number of outposts out of the illegal ones in the West Bank.
“It is up to him entirely, and on the time and circumstances he sees fit. (Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu won’t make difficulties. They’re in sync,” the source claimed.
Sources close to the defense minister said that the first outposts are expected to be evacuated within a few weeks, with or without settlers’ agreement.
The move is expected to spark unrest by Jewish settlers like the clashes that broke out after Israel decided to withdraw from the Gaza Strip.
