Iran Explains How Obama Can be True to his Word

Iran says the US has to switch sides on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to bring Obama’s promise of change in foreign policy to reality.

“The US must know that the world is not gullible. If there is to be any real change, you must clarify whether you have altered your strategy toward the Palestinians or not,” Iranian Majlis (parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani said in Tehran on Tuesday.

“If you stand by the oppressed people of Gaza and punish Israel, then you will show a true change in tactic,” Larijani added, as he delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the Conference of Prosecutors of Islamic States.

The prosecutors have gathered in the Iranian capital as part of an effort to prosecute some of Israel’s top officials for the war crimes committed during the three-week offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The military campaign claimed the lives of over 1,350 Palestinian men, women and children, injured over 5,450, and made around 60,000 homeless. Three Israeli civilians and at least ten soldiers were also killed in the conflict.

During the whole campaign, the UN did not pass even one binding resolution against Tel Aviv, regardless of repeated international humanitarian reports indicating war crimes, unnecessary civilian loss and the use of banned chemical weapons by Israeli soldiers.

As the bloody war dragged on into 2009, Barack Obama refused to comment on the situation, despite having won the presidential election with the promise of change in US policy.

During his Tuesday speech, Larijani added pulling out of Iraq to the list things Washington must do to rectify its policy regarding the Middle East, saying the world is watching the US to see whether Obama is a man of words or action.

“The Iraqi nation will believe that you have changed only if you apologize to the people for killing 800,000 and you withdraw from the country without trying to replace your military dominance with political control,” said Larijani.
