Big demonstration and violence in Thailand left people dead and injured (10:09):

Thai anti-government protesters have said they will disperse from their stronghold, where they are surrounded by soldiers, at government offices in Bangkok.

Protest leaders called for the so-called Red Shirts to withdraw on Tuesday, saying they were concerned about their safety following street battles that have left two people dead and more than 100 injured.

Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng, reporting from Government House in the capital, said protesters were beginning to slowly move away from their positions at barricades, while troops stayed put just 50m away.

Some protesters said they were not going to give up but would move to another site about a kilometre away, our correspondent said.

But they did appear to be packing up and there was a sense of relief in the air, he said.

Prateep Ungsongtham Hata, a protest leader, told the AFP news agency that leaders held talks throughout the night and “agreed that we will disperse our protesters for a while”.
