The Palestinian issue is on the verge of being removed from preliminary negotiations draft of the Durban II document, warn informed sources.

An official speaking on condition of anonymity said that some Arab nations had recommended excluding the Palestinian case from the upcoming Durban talks, Fars News agency reported on Wednesday.

Although notable progress regarding the Palestinian issues was made in the World Conference against Racism (WCAR) which was held in Durban in 2001, the recent recommendations have undermined the supporters’ efforts, the source added.

The 2001 conference was not originally meant to only address the issue of Palestine and Israel. However, the strong American resistance to any criticism of the racially motivated practices of Israel – the extreme violence, the land theft, the separation wall, the settlements, the protracted military occupation, etc – pushed the issue to center stage.

Israeli and US representatives stormed out in protest to the “anti-Israeli” and the “anti-Semitic” sentiments that pervaded the conference.

The official said the new suggestions made by some Arab States have pushed the Palestinian case so far that it is likely to be removed from the upcoming conference.

The World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, and Xenophobia is scheduled to be held in Geneva, April 20-25.

Israel, the US and some other countries decided not to participate in the next conference. The US conditioned its participation in the April conference in Geneva (Durban II) by removing any specific censure of Israel, and ensuring that Israel was not ‘singled out’ for criticism.

The anti-Israeli sentiment began to become commonplace after Tel Aviv launched an all-out military strike against the Gaza Strip using conventional and unconventional weapons against the Palestinians.
