Israel Abducts 17 Palestinians in West Bank and Gaza

Seventeen Palestinians have fallen victim to the latest Israeli abduction operations launched in the various parts of the West Bank.

The Israeli army raided the cities of Jenin, Tulkarem and Bethlehem late Tuesday and during the early the hours of Wednesday, Palestinian security sources said.

Israeli sources claim that the detainees were wanted activists and were taken for interrogation.

The kidnappings are nevertheless part of a regular Israeli campaign against the Palestinians and are in violation of a security agreement with the Palestinian National Authority.

Israel currently holds at least 11,500 Palestinian prisoners, including women and children, in its jails.

While Israel imposes harsh conditions on Palestinians and forces many to suffer in detention facilities, Tel Aviv has managed to turn media attention to Gilad Shalit.

Shalit — the sole Israeli soldier to be imprisoned by Palestinian resistance fighters — was abducted in response to an Israeli operation on June 24, 2006 that saw two men taken from their homes in the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

Israel has stepped up pressure to force the release of its soldier under its own conditions and in an effort to divert media attention away from its latest three-week war on Gaza.
