Bangladesh says it will form a body to investigate crimes allegedly committed by the Pakistani army and their local supporters in a 1971 war.

‘We will form a probe committee at an inter-ministry meeting scheduled for Wednesday,’ State Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Quamrul Islam told a press conference on Sunday in the capital city of Dhaka.

The minister noted the decision would bring suspected war criminals to justice after nearly four decades.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also barred suspected collaborators from leaving the country.

However, opposition leader Sheikh Khaleda Zia has been staying away from the event.

Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan, declared independence in March 1971.

The will for independence sparked a nine-month war with Pakistan that ended with the intervention of India in support of Bangladesh. Around 3 million people were reportedly killed during the conflict that led to Bangladesh’s independence.
